Bane bonuses include special powers applied when a critical hit is made. The special power is selected from an existing critical hit power of the sword, or a new special power added specifically for that bane opponent. Existing critical hit powers take effect, even if that sword power is not currently active.

They do not impair the wielder’s vision, appearing as faint bands of translucent grey.

Every time a particular bane is enhanced, the existing critical hit power can be increased, or changed to a new critical hit power of the blade, or a new special power added.

Powers

Shadow Blade

When activated, the sword sheds shadowy wisps like smoke. The blade can turn translucent grey and completely invisible in the shadows or darkness.

Each owner enhances the effectiveness of this power.

Energy Drain

On a successful hit with a natural roll of 20, the sword will drain 1 level or hit die from its opponent. Magic protection against energy drain is effective to stop this attack. When an opponent is reduced to 0 hit dice or level, he will lapse into a coma. This reduction, including coma, lasts for a variable number of rounds enhanced with each wielder as indicated below.

The power also drains life from creatures sustained by the negative plane, drawing the negative energy out of the opponent and into the sword in the same fashion. In such cases, tendrils of shadow may be seen flowing from the opponent into the blade.

Life Stealing

Positive energy drained from an opponent can be bestowed upon the wielder. When the wielder’s hit points are below maximum, then the wielder gains as many hit points as the opponent loses, restoring up to the wielder’s maximum hit points. Negative energy drained from an opponent goes into the blade and provides no benefit to the wielder.

Further, the wielder’s hit points can temporarily exceed the maximum amount. The bonus hit points last for the same duration as the drained opponent has a reduction based on the roll from the table above. The maximum bonus has increased based on enhancements from previous wielders, as indicated on the chart below.

Shadow

At will, the blade can shed wispy strands of shadow like tendrils of smoke, giving the blade a shaggy hairy look. The wisps can be of any desired length up to the maximum radius. The wisps are particularly effective against infravision since the wisps with have warm and cools strands. They can wrap around the wielder, providing effective concealment. They do not impair the wielder’s vision, appearing as faint bands of translucent grey.

Once per day, the blade can create shadows. All sources of light and dark, both normal and magical, are negated within the radius of effect. Creatures able to hide in shadows can do so in these magical shadows even if under direct observation. Creatures from the plane of Shadow can move and attack normally while hiding in these shadows, effectively giving them improved invisibility.

The radius is as follows:

  • Noctdrakken
    • Shed shadow 10’ radius
    • Create shadows 30 yard radius
  • Lyassa Khilat
    • Shed shadow 10’ radius
    • Create shadows 45 yard radius
