Esterel is an intelligent short sword created from a summoned greagzim. Graegzim are gaseous beings of swirling sparkling gases of raw life force native to the ethereal plane.  Graegzim are chaotic neutral, with evil tenancies.  Their native form on the material plane is a 6’ diameter glowing grey cloud. When summoned by powerful wizards, graegzim are typically bound into one or two predefined forms; one inanimate form equal to a +1 magic item, and an animate form in the shape of a small faerie creature like a sprite or pixie. They can reason, but only in a simple fashion. They have poor memories and tend to whine and complain a lot.
When a paladin holds this weapon in front of him, he turns undead as a cleric of equal level; a 3rd-level paladin turns undead with the same effectiveness as a 3rd-level cleric (use Table 19 in Chapter 4). The paladin must be of 3rd level or higher to turn undead, with or without this sword. Ghosthunters receive no turning bonus.

Esterel is slightly more powerful than a typical graegzim and serves as a +2 item.  He is chaotic neutral.  His bound inanimate form is a dull silver short sword.  His animate form has the appearance of a fremlin, a small slate colored goblinoid with wings.  Esterel only ever remembers his sword form, but he can be commanded to assume his gaseous, inanimate and animate forms at will.
The sword provides two benefits to paladins of all levels: a +5 bonus against all undead; and +2 bonus to saving throws against undead magical attacks, including a ghoul's paralyzing touch and a vampire's charm

Simple alteration magic can be used to reshape Esterel to any simple single-piece inanimate form or any small faerie type creature, but if commanded to transform, he can only become a short sword or fremlin.  Due to his chaotic nature such changes improve his disposition considerably.

Esterel appears as a very plain short sword entirely made of dull grey metal. Even the grip is metal with a rough texture.
