Chiaroscuro

From House of Khilat

This scimitar is matte black metal on the left side and shiny white metal on the right. The blade is wide with a curled tip so that it cuts rather than pierces. The scimitar is balanced for juggling and throwing. The pommel is shaped with a stylized face with eyes, nose and a large mouth which is upturned into a large smile on the white side and a turned down grimace on the black side.

Powers

The full scimitar is +3 to hit and damage. The sword causes confusion on a critical hit. The sword can also cast confusion once per day. The confusion has all the affects of the spell, but manifests as alternating fits of hyperactive glee and hopelessness switching each round.

On command it can shed beams of light and dark that are distinctly visible out to 2 feet from the blade, having appearance similar to the rays of light coming through clouds on a partly cloudy day. The rays cause random patterns of light and shadow which illuminate or obscure out to 30'.

After the owner possesses the sword for 24 hours, he will be granted proficiency in its use, and if already proficient with a scimitar, then specialization regardless of the character's class. Further, the wielder will become proficient in juggling, with an additional slot of proficiency if he can already juggle. These bonus proficiencies only apply when wielding the sword, or any of its 4 individual blades. Additional objects can be juggled while holding or juggling the weapon.

The sword can split into two scimitars, one matte black and the other shiny white metal. The face on the pommels show a full grimace for the black blade and a full grin for the white. Further, two additional grey steel scimitars can be created, and can remain until dismissed by the wielder or the black and white scimitars are merged. The grey scimitars appear to simply fall out from either of the main blades, often while being juggled.

  • White Scimitar is treated as +2 in combat, and +3 versus evil creatures. It does double damage against undead and creatures from the lower planes. It radiates a brilliant white light out to 30'. Once per day it can cast an Emotion spell causing happiness, friendship, hope or courage.
  • Black Scimitar is treated as +2 in combat, and +3 versus good creatures. It does double damage against creatures from the upper planes or those with significant amounts of positive energy. It radiates darkness casting dull shadows out to 30'. Once per day it can cast an Emotion spell causing sadness, hate, hopelessness or fear.
  • Grey Scimitars are magical and can hit creatures that are only affected by magical weapons, but have no bonuses in combat or any other magical abilities.

So long as one of the main blades, or if two of the grey blades remains in the wielder's possession, the main blades can be thrown up to 120' to strike an opponent and the blade will return in the same round. The grey scimitars can be juggled, lent to allies or even thrown, though they will not automatically return but can be dismissed and recreated in the following round.

Should they become separated, the black and white scimitars can always detect the location of each other, providing a direction and sense of distance to the other, so long as they remain on the same plane of existence. Once the blades are within 300 feet of each other, the exact direction and distance can be detected along with the exact activity of the blade, such as lying dormant, being carried, wielded in battle or flying throug the air. This location is so exact that the owner can even catch a flying blade mid-air without having to see it. What is happening around a distant blade can't be directly detected, though actions such as combat could be inferred by the movements of the blade. The location of the grey scimitars can also be detected well enough within the 300 foot radius to know distance and direction and always allow them to be caught by the owner. If other small objects are juggled while juggling any of the scimitar blades, a sense of their location is gained precise enough to juggle in magical darkness.

Should the black and white blades come into the possession of two people, then a battle for possession of the magic item can take place. This can occurs when a thrown scimitar is caught mid-air by an enemy. If either also has a grey blade in hand while the other doesn't, then the one holding two scimitars can command the other main blade to fly to him. If either wielder was juggling his blade when the other opponent calls for the opposite blade, there is a 50% chance that the blade is called while mid-air and immediately flys to the one who called. If both possess an equal number of blades, then a battle of wills can ensue, with control of the weapon passing to the first to success a bend bars roll, while the other fails their bend bar roll.
